The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making By Catherynne M. Valente

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland In A Ship Of Her Own Making is a very complicated but awesome book by Catherynne M. Valente. September, an ordinary 12 year old girl, is tired of washing pink teacups and playing with the same small amiable dog, and longs for adventure, the kind of adventure girls have in fairy tales. But she can’t find very much of that in Omaha, Nebraska. That’s why when the green wind rides up on a leopard and asks if September wants to go to Fairyland, she immediately accepts. (Wouldn’t you?) But there’s trouble in Fairyland, and September needs to sort it all out; and of course, there is fun included.

Through all her problems and adventures, September has always had friends to help her. All, strange, yes, one being made out of soap, another being half dragon half library. And she’s made many sacrifices along the way for other creature’s benefits, including trading her shadow for a pooka girl’s safety. She also has visited some very strange cities, like a city where it’s always Autumn, and a city made out of yarn. “I wonder if every city in Fairyland is made of some strange thing?” is all September can say when she steps through the bread gates of a town made all out of golden-brown baked goods.

I thought I wouldn’t like this book at first because I thought it was one of those magical-land books where the character goes on the same boring old-fashioned adventures, wishes to go home, and gets home. But it’s more of a mix between a book of riddles and The Wizard of Oz, with the bad parts of each taken out. So I would recommend this book to people who like both. I like both, and I loved this book, though at some points it got a little too crazy to understand the direction of the story. I would rate this book 4 stars because I loved it, but it was hard to understand at some points and it got a little boring towards the middle. But don’t stop reading in the beginning, because that’s what I did, but my mom told me to keep reading, and it got better.

P.S: The book’s as good as the title!

Spirits in the Park, By Scott Mebus

warning this is a second book in the series

Rory has known about Mannahatta, the Native American world, for a very long time. Rory is a really good basketball player, he is strong, filled with passion and loves everything. “The boy can’t relax.” Says Rory’s sister. Rory is known as the light because he can see the spirits. The spirits world is mixed with the normal world and the gods who ruled New York City in its early days.

Only a month ago is when the earthquake struck. The earthquake affected him and his family. And then Sergeant Kiffer takes Rory to his place which is a not very good bar. This is no ordinary earthquake, though. Is it New York City attempting at breaking the Trap around Central Park that holds the in the Munsee Indians? Or is it something else?

The Trap must open or the balance between Mannahatta and Manhattan will be destroyed! And only Rory can open it. But will Rory take help from his newfound friends, including the band of children of the gods? A.K.A the Rattle Watch?

The book includes encounters with some of New York most famous figures, including Washington Irving, Captain Kidd and Bill the Butcher who will help Rory figure out how to do that. And the answer may just surprise him. . . .

I give this a book a 3 out of 5 stars because I was not on the tip of my toes the whole time. I like books that have a dangerous corner every page of the book. I read the first and that was much different. Things happened after one thing was resolved. This book isn’t half as good as the first.

Plastic Polly, by Jenny Lundquist

UnknownThis book is about a girl named Polly. She is the 2nd most popular girl at Winston Academy next to her best friend Kelsey. Polly is the kind of girl who agrees with whatever Kelsey says. She and Kelsey are always ganging up on the 3rd most popular girl, Melinda. I don’t like Melinda because she is snooty and bossy. Polly also used to be friends with a girl named Alyssa. She and Polly and Kelsey got into a fight so now they aren’t friends anymore.

Polly’s school’s rival, American River and Winston Academy always have a talent show called the Groove It Up and this year Kelsey is in charge. But when Kelsey injures herself she can’t do it. Polly has to step in to help. “Kelsey rolls her eyes.’what happens to the vice president if the president is unable to perform her duties?’ I stop as the light finally clicks on.” That is what happens when Polly is asked to help.

I really liked this book because it would never happen at LREI because we don’t have a Groove It Up. It is in 1st person and I really like that because you get to know the character more. I would recommend this to people who have a competitive spirit because that is a fairly big part of the book. I would rate this 100 out of 5 stars. This is one of the best books ever. The author writes like it could be happening in to you.

The Summer of May, by Cecilia Galante

Unknown

This book reivew is by Cloe Davis

The main character is May, when she does not want somebody in the world she does not want them to be in the world. This book takes place  in 3 different places: May’s house, the school, and her best friends house

May did something she was not supposed to do.  Now she has to take summer school. She wants to get out of this situation that she does not like. She has a little help from her best friend. She is stuck in a classroom for the whole summer with the teacher she hates, Or will she get out of the problem? May’s best friend loves the Beatles, “Olive held up 2 CD’s,”The White Album? Or Abbey Road?” Olive read.” Those C.D’s are the Beatles, See she loves them.

I enjoyed this book a lot I loved, because the way the story is told and how the characters have there own personality. I recommend this book to people that like reading about other people getting trouble. But I also think that people who like all books would and will like it. I would want to rate this book 90 out of 100 stars I think that there could be more action. But I have to rate 5 or less so a 4 out of 5 stars.

Bunnicula By Deborah and James Howe

This book is about the Monroe family and they have a dog named Harold and a Cat named Chester. Toby, and Pete Monroe, and Ms. and Mr. Monroe were out from the movies and then they brought back home a Rabbit that they found in the streets. After a couple of weeks with the new pet, this pet does not speak and ignores Chester and Harold. Chester the cat is jumping to conclusions and saying that this new “pet” is acting strange and might not be a normal pet at all.

Harold the dog is being the total opposite of Chester and just saying that maybe the new pet is just shy and needs a little time to fit in.

After another couple of weeks this new rabbit has been acting strange a lot and Chester decided to stay up all night and see what’s going on. While Chester was up, he saw the Rabbit eat all of the Monroes vegetables. This rabbit is not eating the vegetables but is sucking the color out of the vegetables that there turning white. The Monroes don’t know what’s going on but Chester sure does. So Chester tells Harold the whole story and Harold stays up during the night, and Harold can not believe what he’s seeing and Chester cannot believe what he’s about to say. Chester get’s all crazy and says that this rabbit is not just a rabbit, it’s a vampire rabbit and his name is Bunnicula. Here is quote from Chester the cat. “Don’t judge a rabbit by it’s cover if you know it’s a vampire.”

bunnicula-bgI would recommend this book to someone who likes mystery books because this book has a lot of mystery. I would also rate this book 4 stars **** because it’s a great book but in the middle of the book it starts to get a little confusing like, first Bunnicula sucks the color from the vegetables and then the Monroes figure out who it is and then they think it’s Chester and stuff. Some mystery books are confusing and this one is, just a little.

Kicks Saving The Team, By Alex Morgan

My book was called Kicks Saving The Team, by Alex Morgan. This was the third 512RKosGidLbook in the series. The main characters names are Devin is one of the team captains. Zoe is one of Devin’s best friends in the book she has her baht mitzvah on the same day as the championship game, Emma another one of Devin’s best friends Emma is very clumsy, Jessi Devins best, best friend, And Frida, the actor another one of Devin’s friends. Devin is a very sporty and sensitive character. One scenario when she is sporty is when She makes the winning goal at a playoff game. That means she practises a lot! A sanrio when she is sensitive is when the school newspaper prints her quote wrong and half the team goes against her she has really hard feelings about that. Devin lives in Kentville California in the present.

In the book the school newspaper prints Devin’s quote wrong and half the team goes against Devin. They can not work together as a team. Two important events are when they have the championship game and when Coach Flores leaves and they are stuck with Coach Valentine. An important quote is “I Don’t know where I would be without my team” It’s important because the newspaper said it as “I don’t know where my team would be without me.” It also shows how much she cares. It also broke up the team which is a very important part of the book.

I enjoyed the book it was funny not to descriptive and has different paces depending on the time. I would recommend the book to girls who like books about friendship and sports. I would rate the book 9,0000000000000000000 out of 5 stars.

(Don’t read the book if you have not read the first two.)

Alex Rider Skeleton Key by Anthony Horowitz.

Alex Rider: Skeleton Key by Anthony Horowitz is about a kid named Alex Rider. Alex is an excited ambitious and stubborn child for example he does not want to go on a mission he will keep a very good argument not to go. When Carver and Troy CIA operatives pretending to be his parents so they can get on to Skeleton Key. Tell him to stay at the hotel he left to check out the island. (Skeleton Key)

The plot is about a man called General Alexei Sarov who has a nuclear bomb and is trying to blow up his home country, Russia. A main part is when alex turns off the bomb. Another Main part is when alex is asked by Alan Blunt tells him that he has to help the CIA and go two Skeleton Key. “You won’t get away with this” Said alex like in anything with a bad guy.

I did enjoy this book because it is exciting, scary, and boring at some parts …………………………………… it’s worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would give this book about 500 out of 5 stars   *****l*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

The School For Good And Evil By Soman Chainani

My book was called The School For Good And Evil. It is by Soman Chainani. The main characters are Sophie, ( A beautiful young girl who loves pink, and is very nice,) and Agatha ( who is a sort of hag and she is not very nice at first.)  Sophie and Agatha are best friends. The setting of most of the book is the two schools. One for the good, the other for the evil.

“ Sophie had waited all her life to be kidnapped.”  That was the sentence that drew me in and made me want to read more of it. In the book, every four years, two children are kidnapped. One is beautiful and beloved, the other dark and evil. One is taken for good, the other for evil.

I really enjoyed this book because it was very funny. One funny thing was when the Circus was happening. The circus is when both schools get together to show off their talents.  I would recommend this book to people who like silliness, and magical fantasy In this book, the girls are up against each other, and the legendary School Master whom no one has ever seen, or so people think.. I would rate this book five *’s out of 4 *’s. This is a really great book and I loved it because it was funny, and insperational.

Out Of The Blue By Victor Cruz And Peter Schrager

The main character of this book is Victor Cruz. Victor Cruz is a football player. Victor Cruz was a fighter. He’d never give up. It took him 5 tries to get his SAT’s high enough to get into UMass. The book also gives a lot of messages like don’t give up, keep trying. This book is also cool because you would think that it would be easy getting into the NFL yet it’s hard look at Victor Cruz. One of the NFL’s top wide receivers.

I enjoyed the book because Victor Cruz is a person who I like as a football player and I like to see how he came about. Victor Cruz’s main problem was that he couldn’t go to college because his SAT scores weren’t high enough. His other problem was that he wasn’t getting enough playing time when he was accepted. Therefore no scouts would be able to find him and like how he’s doing and he’ll end up undrafted. If there was one more chapter in the book I would talk about his next “cut day” and how for once he can feel confident that he’s going to make the team. You can also look at a player a different way. The most exciting quote in the book is when Victor’s wife says, “Vic, I’m pregnant.” It really changed how I look at Victor Cruz. Now I can look at him like a father. I never thought he was a father. And now I know he is.

I think this is a good autobiography/biography to start with if you’re a sports fan that isn’t interested in biographies because that was me when I started to read this book. If I didn’t like biographies when I started the book why did I start to read this book? Well, I saw Marlowe reading Out of the Blue and it looked good but I didn’t know that it was a biography and I ordered it online. Don’t you like how things work out like that sometimes?

I would give this book 5 out of 5 stars because it is written well and you don’t want to put it down because you get dragged into the book and it’s really interesting.  (Fun fact I sat at the couch reading this book over playing video games).

The Scorch Trials by James Dashner

This book is called Scorch Trials by James Dashner. The characters are the Thomas and the Gladers. (Well actually Thomas is a glader) The Gladers are the kids that got dumped in the Glade with their no memory. In this book it turns out that the Maze is part one in a series of tests a weird organization called WICKED. The Glade is inside giant maze that opens in the morning and closes at night. Thomas mostly worries about his own problems because after they get these tattoos that tells them their place in the group all Thomas thinks about is how his tattoo says “to be killed by group B.” The setting of this book is in future America where there are sun flares that give people diseases that turn people into cranks and when you’re a full blown crank you go crazy.

Spoiler! Don’t Read The Second Paragraph If You Haven’t Read The Book

Thomas’s main problem is that he has a disease called the flare and needs to go 100 miles north to get to a safe haven where there’s a cure. An important event is when a hurricane strikes and kills lots of gladers. Another big event is when Thomas gets kidnapped by group B and Teresea is in charge of the group. Teresea is the only girl glader who Thomas can talk to in his mind if she also wants to. That is important because that means Teresea betrayed him. Also, a big event is when Thomas sees Teresea and kisses her. I think that Teresea betrayed him because of this quote: “The betrayal meant he couldn’t trust her anymore, and his heart told him he couldn’t forgive her.”

I enjoyed this book because most of the time it kept you on your toes and because it had lots of action. I would recommend this book to people who like mystery because this book is pretty mysterious. It is mysterious because the character doesn’t know a lot about the world he’s in. I would also recommend this book to people who like action because it has lots of action. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.
