Fablehaven By Brandon mull

imgresThe title of the book that I  read this summer is called Fablehaven by Brandon Mull. Kendra Sorenson  is not that happy to go on a “fake” vacation to her grandparent’s place, While her parents are on a 17 day cruise. Kendra feels this way because the summer before she over heard her parents saying “we have no other choice but to send them” .While on the other hand, Seth Sorenson is Kendra’s younger brother and he is very enthusiastic and always wants to do something. The setting is in the present because they have cars and cellphones. It takes place in Fablehaven where monsters of all shape and sizes can live in peace without the humans knowing where to hunt them down. But everybody on the farm knows what Fablehaven is.

One of the things that I notice about the characters is that if Kendra and Seth were not brother and sister and they happened to go to the same school they would hate each other. So they are not very compatible together and that makes teamwork hard. The book is about two kids ( Kendra and Seth) have to go to their grandparents house while their parents  are on a 17 day cruise because their aunt died. While they are there, there grandparents have these crazy rules like don’t go in the forest or don’t go in the barn but Seth goes into the forest and discovers Fablehaven. Soon after that they drink a magic milk that there grandfather was hiding and when they did they saw all the monsters in fablehaven but still are not allowed to go. I know Kendra is upset because she said “we went through all the trouble to figure this place out, but now if we go were stuck in our room for the rest of the trip”.

I did not enjoy the book because I thought it was poorly written and it was too predictable. I would not recommend this book to anybody, the read was way too long. I think the author just ran out of ideas because this book could make sense in 3 pages. I rate this book 0 out of five.

THE KEYS TO THE KINGDOM BY GARTH NIX

The book that I read over the past week is The Keys To The Kingdom Mr. Monday by Garth Nix. The main character’s name is Arthur. He is very curious. Arthur’s problem is that he was given a key by a
mysterious man and he has no idea what to do with it.  He discovers many mysterious things that have been following him. When he has the key his wounds go away and things come to life. Arthur is trying to get to the bottom of this. This story takes place in the present because they describe phones and all kinds of current technology.

Arthur was given the key by a man named Mr Monday who thought Arthur was going to die as soon as he got it. Mr Monday’s assistant Sneezer betrayed him and somehow the key did the exact opposite. Mr Monday has been trying to get Arthur’s key back with his henchmen who are dog humans. The Fetcher look more like dogs in attack mode and like humans when in defense mode. Arthur also got an atlas with the key. In the atlas it said that the weakness of the dog like Fetchers is salt. When he pours salt on them it lets out a  horrifying fume that puts the school in quarantine. In the atlas it also said that there was a house in his neighborhood that belonged to Mr Monday. Arthur decides to go inside and finds out wonders. I am pretty sure if Arthur was not so curious none of this  would have happened. Like Arthur’s mom said “Curiosity kills”… and in his case literally.

I enjoyed the book because it kept me in suspense the whole time. Also it is very interesting so I always think about the book , even when I am not reading it. I also like the way the story changes from Arthur being a normal person to being some kind of wizard. I would recommend this book to somebody who can remember their facts from the beginning all the way to the end. But I mainly recommend this to people who like big surprises because if you don’t, this is not for you. I rate this book five out of five stars.

Pendragon By D.J Machal

The book that I read is called Pendragon by D.J. Machal. The three main characters in the book are Mark, Bobby and Courtney. Bobby loves his normal life, he does not want to have some kind of amazing ability. When Bobby first found out what he was, his first thought was “How am I going to get out of here?” not “How can I help?” Mark is really shy. When he talks to people who are not his friends he stutters in every sentence. Courtney is very competitive she is quite the opposite of Mark. At school they grabbed Courtney off the girl’s volleyball team and put her on the boy’s volleyball team because she was too good. There are two parts of the story’s setting, there are Bobby chapters and there are Mark and Courtney’s chapters. The setting in Bobby’s chapters is in the past in Durenderon, a far away land packed with monsters and all kinds of other weird things. Mark and Courtney’s chapters take place in the present with cars and cellphones.

The book is about how Bobby and his Uncle Press are travelers. There are a whole bunch of different territories and every  territory has a turning point. A turning point is when a territory has peace for ever or it is bad for ever. Travelers try to get the turning point to be piece but others don’t… Durenderon is at its turning point and the Migilo (who are little humans) are slaves to the Kagan Army (which are tall knights). They yanked Bobby away from his life at home so what they did was they let Bobby Write notes to his friend (Mark). Mark then  shares the notes with Courtney (Courtney is Bobby’s girlfriend) and they read Bobby’s stories. Bobby Really wants to go back to his home but he realized the Migilo need him and if he flies away  now he would kill them. To prove that he felt like he could go back the book says “I could have just left right then and there but I couldn’t, there were people depending on me”.

I enjoyed the book a lot because it did not wait a “century” to get to the plot so the whole time you want to know what happens next. I also liked the way they made the characters, because they did not make them cheesy, they made them normal. It felt like Bobby could actually be a person. I recommend this book for kids 9 and up because smaller kids would not understand the book. I also recommend this book to people who like fantasy because every single moment of the book is packed with fantasy. I rate the book 5 out of 5.                 imgres

Inkheart by Cornelia Funke

by Zachary Cappadocia

The book that I read over the weeks was Inkheart by Cornelia Funke. The main characters in the book are Maggie and her dad. Maggy is a full fledged book reader and she is always very curious about things she is not supposed to know. For example, in the beginning of the book she tries to hear what her dad was saying to the mysterious new person even though she could tell her dad wanted her as far away from their conversation as possible. Maggie’s dad Mo is a book reader also but he is kind of awkward when ever he is lying and he really tries to keep the truth away from maggie. In the beginning of the book the setting is there their aunt’s house which is pretty big and pretty fancy and not for kids to live in because she thinks  if kids live in her house it will get dirty and her precious books will be destroyed. In the whole book Magie and Mo are moving around but that is the first place that we know they traveled. This book could happen right now in the present because the houses have electricity and the houses have a stove that runs off of gas.

Maggie and Mo’s problem is Maggie gets a little too curious and Mo reads out of an unlucky book and the the bad guy in the book magically comes straight into their living room. Maggie has to learn magic to stop this strange villain. One of the important events that happened was when the visitor Dustfinger made fire come out of his mouth because that was the first glimpse of magic. Another important event was when the thugs came to rob the book shortly after Mo read it to maggie.  Thats when the disaster happened. One little quote to prove that the evil guy is bad is “I tried to call the police but the lines are down”,said the aunt. That quote proves if the police had came they would have taken the crook away.

I enjoyed the book a lot. If I were to rate this book on a scale of 1 to 5, it would be a 4 because I really enjoyed how they got you interested into the book really fast. Another reason why I enjoyed the book is because I am a fan of fantasy. If you are a fan of fantasy this book is for you. I recommend this book to people who like fantasy because there are a lot of big adventures that have some really strange things but they are always believable. I also reccomend this book to people who like mystery because it has a lot of mystery. The mystery might come to your liking or they might not.

Warriors by Erin Hunter

The book that I am reading is called Warriors  by Erin Hunter. If I were to rate this book on a scale of 1 to 10 it would be a 10. I would say this book is for a person who likes adventure. The book is about  fictional cats who live in the forest and do a lot of exploring that they should not be doing. The book is called Warriors because the cats start in the nursery and they rise up to be a warrior or a medicine cat. The main event aside from being a warrior is the main character Jaypaw is blind and he wants and he wants to become a warrior. I think the book was great and I highly recommend this book to everybody.

Scumble by Ingrid Law

The book that I is finished is called Scumble by Ingrid Law. Scumble is a book for people who like fantasy. The book is about a family who has something called a savvy. A savvy is a magical power. Nobody knows that the family has powers. All of the family members get their powers at 13. But after they turn 13 some of the family gets soft and nice savvys and others destroy stuff. The book is basically about them mastering their special savvy. Scumble is the second book in the series and Savvy is the 1st. If I were to rate this book on a scale of 1 to 5…5 being the best it would be  off the charts.

The Million Dollar Shot

The book that I read was called the Million dollar shot  by Dan Gutman .On a scale of 1 to 5 I would give it a 3 because it took him a long time to get to the main point. But when he did it was great.I recommend  this book to people who like sports a lot .The main characters name is Eddie Ball and he is great at shooting a basketballs. All of his life changes when he sends a poem and to finkle foods and he gets the chance to shoot and if he gets the ball in the net he gets a million dollars .The book takes place in the present. Can he do it? The book was pretty good.
