The Giver

My book review is on The Giver by Louis Lowery. The main character’s name is Jonah. Jonah lives in a very controlled society.  When you are one you are a one, two you are called a two, so on. When you turn nine you get a bike, when your group turns twelve you stop going to school and you get assignd a job. At the ceremony when Jonah turns twelve, he is chosen  for a very special job. He is going to be the next receiver.

Now Jonah doesn’t know what the receiver is. When he gets his sheet to start his training it says “You are allowed to lie.” Lie? Why would he lie? It also says he will go go through much pain. Why? How? The old receiver will train him. Jonah calls the receiver the giver. The giver shows him how life used to be, before this society changed. The Giver changes Jonah by sharing memory’s of the past before the society changes and makes Jonah realize pain and how other people live.

The giver gives Jonah memories by transferring them through him to Jonah. The first memory is of sledding. But then the actual pain starts. He gets memory frostbite and cuts and burns. The society has made it so no one feels pain. There is no sadness, but not much happiness. Jonah didn’t know what snow was, he had never sledded. The society didn’t even have hills. A big thing he learns is what color is. His soceity has no color.

I enjoyed this book a lot. I liked it because it has many feeling, it interested me and it was different from any book I had ever read. I rate this book 5 stars. I think everyone should read this book. This book is also kind of sad so maybe a reader who likes a little emotion.

The Glass Sentence

The Glass Sentence

by Tilda Sutter (Well technically S.E. Grove)

My book review is on The Glass Sentence by S.E. Grove. The main character’s names are Sophia and Theo. In this book, in 1799, something called The Great Disruption happened. Every country was thrown into different time periods. Sophia lives in New Occident, Boston. At this point in history mapmaking has become a delicate mixture of Science and Magic. Her uncle is a famous mapmaker. Her parents are lost because they went exploring and never came back.. Sophia lives with her uncle. Her uncle is kidnapped by “Sandmen”. Sophia and Theo go to find him.

Sophia’s uncle makes memory maps, which is a map that when you touch one area on the map, it  brings you to someone’s memory of something that happened there. When her uncle is kidnapped, she finds a note saying, “Find Veressa and a block of glass.” Veressa is a girl her uncle knew from college. Now Veressa lives in the Badlands. Sophia and Theo also end up on a pirate ship. Sophia is worried about trusting Theo. Theo lies a lot. In this book people have different ideas of how The Great Disruption happened. “It cannot be undone. Every Cartographer, scientist, cosmographer will tell you the same thing: there can only be another disruption.” That means that the Great Disruption will never end or stop, it can only happen again.

I would  rate this book  100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars out of 5, but it can’t be over five, so five stars. The book is so good. I recommend this book to anyone who can read, actually if you can’t read, get someone to read it to you! I like this book because it makes you think of a lot of different concepts. It also makes you feel like you are in the book. It also makes you think of how your life would change if you were with Sophia and Theo. I also should mention that this book has not been published but you can get a advanced readers copy from the library. It will be published on June 12th.

A Snicker Of Magic

My book review is on A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd . It is this girl named Felicity Pickle. Her Mama has this thing where they are always moving for no reason. This book takes place in the newest place they moved to, Midnight Gulch.

In Midnight Gulch there used to be magic. Two brothers who used to live there were the cause of that, but then a mishap happened and the town lost all of their magic.

Felicity is a word collector, which means she sees words floating around people and she takes them. She had no friends. Until she meets Jonah. Jonah also has a secret, you find it out at the start of the book.

18222556In the book Jonah convinces Felicity to join the duel, which is like a talent show. He wants her to share words. Felicity is nervous because she is very shy. “After two painful minutes of silence, I Managed to mumble, “ My name is Flea…””

I really liked this book because it is very unexpected and there are a lot weird connections. I recommend this book to people who know how to read. It has something for everyone. I rate this book *****!

The House Of Hades

The House of Hades

By Tilda Sutter

I just read this awesome book called The House of Hades by Rick Riordan in The Heroes Of Olympus Series. Do not keep reading  unless you have read the first three books in the series.

Jason has a problem. He is on a quest to save the world. Usually Jason and Percy share being the head of the group of seven, but now Percy and Annabeth are in Tartarus, which is a place in the underworld.  so now Jason is in charge and he can’t handle that pressure. All of the stuff is kind of depending on him. “Whether or not he made it back to New Rome after the war, Jason had to step up now and act like a praetor”.

Piper needs Jason. She has a big crush on him. They are kind of together. But Piper also needs Jason because she can’t fight a fight by herself. But she has Hazel to help her. Hazel is Piper’s closest friend. Everyone is always underestimating her. “ Still underestimating me,” Piper told the goddess. ‘’ You really need to work on that”

Hazel can’t do this. She is supposed to be able to use magic. But no one decided to show Hazel how to do that. Her boyfriend Frank isn’t really helping, though he is trying. She is supposed to use her magic when they enter the underworld. Too much pressure. “I can’t even control my own dreams , She wanted to scream. How am I supposed to control the mist?”

Frank can’t live up to this. He does not want to be  a son of Mars, it makes him seem to strong and he feels so weak. All Frank can do is change into animals. His full life depends on a stick. If that stick burns, he dies. Leo’s teasing doesn’t help.  “Leo’s always teasing me, but this one really stuck to me I know I am not as pricey as Percy or Jason but am I at least worth 2 or 3 Franks?”

Percy is going insane. He is Tartarus the darkest place of the underworld. Monsters he killed are everywhere, waiting for revenge. Percy would not survive unless Annabeth his Girlfriend was there too. “They sat together on a ledge next to a fiery waterfall. “

Annabeth is too guilty. She was the one who got Percy here in the first place. Tartarus is not a place for Annabeth or for anyone who has at least one braincell. Not many people do here. She also lost her favorite kanife and is without a weapon. “When they reached the ledge Annabeth was sure she’d signed their death warrants.”

Leo can’t focus. If the person who was about to kill him was a girl, Leo would fall in love with her and trust her. Lucky for him everyone they are facing is a girl. All Leo can do is build things, fix things and break things after he makes them. Leo also is not considered smart. “He didn’t know  italian for Hello, may I see your dangerous chemicals please?”

I loved this book and think you will too. I recommend it to anyone who likes magical realism. I rate this book ******************** stars out of 5. It is also really funny. “Bob the Titan sat crossed legged next to the altar, happily munching on a piece of pizza.”

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

.

The_Lightning_Thief_cover-1

So here is my book review on The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. So imagine you were an everyday city boy but you kept getting kicked out of schools for reasons you can not explain, well that is Percy Jackson’s life. He is twelve years old and this might be his first year where he is not kicked out of his boarding school, Yancy Academy. His best friend is a boy named Grover who walks with a limp and his favorite teacher, Mr.B is in a wheelchair. His least favorite teacher that hates him to death is Ms.Dodds. One day Ms.Dodds asks to speak with him alone, then his teacher attacks him and turns into a flying monster. Somehow he kills the monster with the pen, (that turned into a sword,) that Mr.B gave him. So now think, if you were an everyday city boy and a monster just attacked you and you killed it and you are only twelve you would be freaked out. So that was how Percy Jackson is feeling.

Very long story short he figures out that greek gods are real. His mom was married to Poseidon, the god of the sea. So he is half mortal and half god. He is called a half-blood or demigod. He goes to a camp called camp half-blood and meets a girl named Annabeth who is a daughter of Anetha. He also finds Grover there and it turns out that he is a satyr. A satyr is a person who has a human body from waist up and goat legs from waist down. Soon Percy and his friends are sent on a quest. Percy is being blamed for stealing Zeus, the god of the sky’s lightning bolt. They think Hades, the god of the underworld stole it. They have to find Hades, get the bolt back and prove to the gods Percy did not steal it.

While he’s on the quest you wonder if Hades really did steal the bolt and if proving his innocence to the gods is really the reason he accepts his Quest. To make it worse they have about 10 days to do it!!!!!!!! I rate this book *********************** out of five stars. This was literally the third time I read the series, ( did I mention Percy Jackson is a series)  I recommend it to anyone who likes a twist on realistic fiction.

11 Birthdays, by Wendy Mass

My book review is on 11 Birthdays by Wendy Mass. It is about Amanda and her ex-best friend Leo. Leo is her ex-best friend because they have the same birthday and used to celebrate it together, but on their 10th birthday Amanda overheard Leo saying mean things about her to Leo’s other friends. She hasn’t talked to him since. Now it is her 11th birthday and it will be the first time they have not celebrated it together. Leo is having a party with hypnotists and football players and Amanda is having a lame Hollywood themed party. All she thinks that it is so unfair. After she has the worst birthday ever and she finally goes to sleep to end the day, things take a twist. When she wakes up it is her 11th birthday again! When she realizes someone else is stuck in this day again with her, she has to fight her way out. This book is full of unexpected turns especially when you meet Angelina, ( hint, hint, clue, clue.) I rate this book five stars to people who like a little mystery but not too much. I like this book because it is very fun and full of twists.

Through all of the mistakes you will wonder if they can stay best friends. When they find their powers how will they survive?
