Reading to Kids at Homes for the Homeless

Name: Lucia Tsurumaki

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Homelessness & Education

Date of Fieldwork: February 26, 2019

Name of Organization: Homes for the Homeless

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Liz Thurman

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

We volunteered at the organization Homes for the Homeless (HFH). We read books and played with small kids who were staying at their center and learned about what the organization is doing.

What I learned:

I learned how important to have services like these. The kids were provided with meals, entertainment, and education. It is important to have this so parents can focus on getting stable housing, instead of worrying about keeping their kid fed. The organization makes a huge impact on families going through housing instability.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned how a small action can help someone and yourself. Reading and playing with kids may not seem like it makes a big difference, but small acts of kindness can make someone’s day better. If the kids are happy and content, the parents of the kids can just worry about getting housing. Not only do these small things help people, but spreading kindness can make yourself feel content and like you helped.

Lucia

Lucia is an 8th grader at LREI. She chose education and poverty as her social justice project because she strongly believes that any kid, no matter the social class, should have access to education.
