Social Justice Group: Gun Violence in the US

Date of Fieldwork: January 29, 2024

Name of Organization and person (people) with whom you met and their title(s): The Newtown action alliance

Type of Fieldwork: Lobbying over zoom

What I did and what I learned about my topic, activism, social justice work or civil and human rights work from this fieldwork?:

Our social justice group zoomed in with people who work at Newtown and they shared there connection with the topic. Many of the people we met had either lost a loves one to the issue of gun violence or lived very close to the location of a mass shooting. We were given the phone numbers of Senators to call and a script to read. The legislation we wanted them to pass is known as Ethan’s law which requires for guns to be safely stored in homes with minors. This law could save thousands of lives and we helped to try to convince senators to back it.
