Interview with Tate Benson

Name: Sophia Gregoire

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, LGBTQIA Youth & Coming Out

Date of Fieldwork: January 10, 2019

Name of Organization: GLESN

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Tate Benson

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We met at Le Pain Quotidien, the one across the street from school. We sat down down stairs and they showed us a folder they had brought for us to look at. We then talked about GLSEN and what they do their and their coming out story until Zariel left to take her Spanish quiz. We then went upstairs and bought them a drink and Stella and I learned more about them as a person and had more of a casual conversation with them, while also staying on topic and talking about LGBTQ+ kids in school and how to deal with homophobic slurs.

What I learned:

What I learned I already knew, they didn’t teach us about our topic but more about GLSEN and what they do, because we didn’t know much about that. We also learned another personal story and more about the LGBTQ+ community as a whole.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Through this fieldwork I learned more about what people at GLSEN are doing to try and help LGBTQ+ students in schools all across America. We learned about the life of an LGBTQ+ person in the workplace and outside and what a normal day would look like for someone, a lot of desk work and a lot of laying in bed doing nothing. This shows that even if you are LGBTQ+ you can live a completely normal life, I already knew that but it shows others that you can live normally no matter what you identify as or who you’re attracted to.
