Sending letters to imprisoned journalists

Name: Max Taetle

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Freedom of the Press

Date of Fieldwork: January 11, 2019

Name of Organization: PEN America

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: No one

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

We wrote letters to imprisoned journalists in Russia, Iran, and Myanmar. All three of them were imprisoned due to unfair behavior from the law. I think it’s important that we do things like that because it gives hope to journalists, and it could help their situation.

What I learned:

We learned about what happens to journalists when they are treated unfairly. All these people were just doing their job, and most of them were doing it well. We also learned some simple things we can do to help people all over the world.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

We mostly learned about ways to help people easily. This is important because of course helping people is good but when your putting yourself at harm for helping people. But this is simple, so everyone can do it.
