What I did:

We Skype-called Becca Mccharen-Tran to talk about her fashion company, Chromat, and her experience as a fashion designer.

What I learned:

I learned that as a fashion designer there is not as much stress on keeping there clothes smaller sizes, but it is the designer’s choice. Ms. Mccharen-Tran is changing that in her company, Chromat, by making all of the clothes custom fit. I also learned that Chromat’s goal is to empower their customers, and to enforce confidence. Something that doesn’t happen in most fashion brands.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Through the fieldwork I learned that fashion designers make the choice to change the status quo. Chromat is trying to change that by having custom fit clothes to make their customers feel confident with themselves. Chromat mainly sells swimsuits and like Ms. Mccharen-Tran shared swimsuits make people feel vulnerable, and to be able to make someone feel good in their swimsuit is one of the most important things a fashion company can do. I learned that even small acts in the fashion industry can set a trend and change the way people see themselves.
