Date of Fieldwork: March 5, 2021

Person (people) with whom you met and their title(s) & Name of Organization: Erica Gerrity

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

Reflection:

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

-Please Introduce yourself.

-Could you describe what your job is?

-What is the best part about helping these women?

-What do these inmates need from you?

-Would you say that most women in prison feel unsafe?

-What is the experience of a pregnant woman in prison?

Having this interview was really educational for me and my partner because Erica had worked in prisons with pregnant women and was a doula currently in prison for inmates giving birth. I learned that women in prison are not giving enough privacy during their birthing experience,  and do not feel safe because the officers in the room do not acknowledge that they are going through something very big in their lives.  Many officers feel that it is just another day at work and they act loud and insensitive towards these women.  Doulas like Erica Gerrity try to create a safe space for that woman at the moment even though they are facing this uncomfortably.
