Reflection:

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I interviewed Dr Marcy Mulconry and OBGYN in Rochester, NY. Dr. Mulconry taught me more about what an OBGYN is and her views on how women are treated in society. She talked about how she can be working 24 hour shifts and even when she is tired after a long day she continues to go home and tell her three kids all about her work and teach them about her job. She told us about the tradition she has of telling her youngest daughter the names of the babies that were given birth. Dr. Mulconry can deliver many babies in one day and she told us she would deliver 14 and try her very hardest not to forget any of their names so she could go home and tell her youngest. There was many steps that lead up to being an OBGYN but Dr. Mulconry explained to us that it is so worth helping people go through hopefully such a memorable time in their life. We learned more about how her as a doctor enjoys having doula’s int he room because they give the patient a voice which is very much needed in the hospital system. Dr. Mulconry tries to supply the patient with all of the necessary needs weather that is with helping them have a more positive mindset and maybe go to mental wellness centers or hiring doula’s for them. Cost is something Dr. Mulconry discussed with us as well and explained that it can become extremely expensive to have a baby and they try to cut down the price for patients. Overall I learned so much from this interview and got to take a deeper look into what OBGYN’s do.

Hi, I'm Suko. I am part of the Maternal Health and Poverty Social Justice group. I enjoy learning about the issues women go through during the long and hard journey of childbirth. Along with enjoying learning about social justice topics I like to hangout with friends and do sports. I enjoy skiing, playing volleyball and basketball. I love to play in sports games because they are super competitive and I really enjoy that.
