Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Michelle Anne Birkett

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

Reflection:

What I did:

What I learned:

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Michelle Anne Birkett explained to us that many LGBTQ teens seek help digitally because of the stigma associated with searching for help in real life. LGBTQ teens go to social media and the internet because it provides a community they may not be able to get in person. These communities provide a great amount of support for the mental health of LGBTQ teens. They can share stories and be able to express their identity and sexuality without being judged by their communities in real life. Michelle Anne Birkett explained that depending on your family and where you live social media may be the only place you are accepted.
