Name: Jade Walk

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Women in the Media

Date of Fieldwork: December 6, 2018

Name of Organization: Interview at MindWell NYC

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Dr. Rebecca Skolnick, Dr. Rachel Hutt, Dr. Jessica Ren

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

My group and I went to MindWell NYC and Interviewed Dr. Rebecca Skolnick, Dr Rachel Hutt. and Dr. Jessica Ran. They are all therapist for teenagers, one thing we asked about was if teenagers ever had issue with social media. They said that there were many issue with teenagers their bodies because of social media. We asked about what they would tell them to do that would help them with the issue. Someone that they said they make the teenager look in the mirror and say what each part of their body is for and what its meaning. This helps them think more about what their body is for more than what their body looks like.

What I learned:

I learned that thinking about your body in a positive way can help with confidence a lot. It can bring up your self esteem and can give you a strong body image. Thinking about yourself and not comparing yourself is one of the best ways to start to love your body. If teens are following anyone who makes them start and compare themselves then they should unfollow them right away and start following people who are body positive and give them confidence.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that meeting with someone one on one can help you a lot more than keeping it to yourself. When people think about social justice they start to think about protests and organizations but it can also be when someone is meeting with someone to talk about their problems, so that they can be solved.
