Interview with Jenny McQuaile

Name: Noelle Raffo

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Women in the Media

Date of Fieldwork: December 6, 2018

Name of Organization: Straight/Curve

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Jenny McQuaile

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We had a phone call with Jenny McQuaile, the director of the film “Straight/Curve.” The documentary is about how media has affected women and teens and how they feel about it.

What I learned:

I learned that just these small terms that people use every day can make a big difference. People often say fat or skinny, but this documentary used the terms “straight/curve”. We say so many thing without really thinking that can be very unproductive.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that there are so many different ways to reach out to people. Jenny decided to make a documentary as a way to convey a positive message to women and young girls. Especially since our topic is focusing on social media, it is hard to do something hands on, so a message is very important to express.
