Sit In On Third Grade Social Justice Class

Name: Ben Connolly

Social Justice Group: Race and Education

Date of Fieldwork: December 18, 2017

Name of Organization: LREI

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Sandra Chapman & Third Grade Class

Type of Fieldwork: Sit In On Class

What I did:

We came to sit in on a third grade social justice class. We didn’t participate, but it was interesting to observe how much they knew at such a young age. Chap made the concepts easier to understand for kids, which was amazing.

What I learned:

While I didn’t learn anything to new on the topic, I learned that LREI is really giving kids a head start on social justice, and it’s impressive to see what they know. Some of the kids really know a lot about what they’re talking about.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that teaching kids about equity early on is helpful. They’re learning the things I learned this year about my topic, so I was slightly embarrassed. Overall I loved how they teach the kids these things and it’s clearly working because they’re so enthusiastic and love it so much.
