Interview with Kim Russell 11/18

My group interviewed Kim Russell, who is the Regional Organizing Manager at the Brady Campaign. She told us about the Brady Campaigns mission which is to cut gun deaths in half by 2025. It’s a big goal, but that’s how they stay motivated. A big point she made is that guns aren’t being used how their owner intended it to used. Many people buy guns for protection, but Kim stated “It (A gun) is more likely that it will be used in homicide and accidental deaths than protection.” This was a really stunning and interesting fact. A gun bought to protect a family is more likely to kill a child than a burglar, or someone with intent to hurt others. Guns are also used in majority of suicides. It’s too easy, pulling a trigger doesn’t involve enough thinking, and this is why gun owners need to hide their guns. The gun and ammo should be hidden separately and the gun should have no ammo in it. Kim herself is a victim to gun violence. She was on a date, and was walking home when she and her date were robbed and shot. She lived obviously, but here fate died in front of her. This is what sparked her to start doing work to fix this problem, and this interview has helped me want to do more work to fix this as well. Gun laws aren’t strict enough and someone needs to do something about it.
