Interview with Donna Dees 11/19

My group interviewed Donna Dees, who is the founder of Million Moms March, which is the largest protest against gun violence of all time. This visit was really fun and interesting. We also interviewed her about her current work with the Brady Campaign. Throughout this interview, she share some interesting facts and statistics about gun violence and gun violence prevention. She told us about a federal law Trump wants passed that means pretty much, if I get a gun permit in Maryland, where the background checks aren’t necessarily stellar, I can now bring the gun to NY legally. This would mean that if a criminal got a gun from a state with poor background checks, they could now legally bring that gun to time square. Obama couldn’t get as much as he wanted done, because he was working with a fairly republican congress, but Trump, being very conservative is going to get a lot done with a republican-heavy congress. This, quite frankly just scares me. This struck me hard, at first Trump becoming president, was more or less a running joke, and a lot young eligible voters didn’t vote, because they were very cocky, and ignorant. As a gun violence PREVENTION group, Trump winning is worse case scenario, but honestly, it pushes me to work harder. It makes we want to go out and do things to help in any way I can. And although the next 4-8 years might be tough on gun violence prevention organizations, they inspire me, because they just don’t give up.
