Interview With Joel Berg and Outreach 11•18•15

On Wednesday, my group and I went to Union Square to do some outreach with a woman named Andrea Shapiro. What we did was before we went around to hand some papers out on other ways to get food, we learned about these organizations. What we learned about was WIC, Food Bucks, and SNAP. We learned about these companies and what they did to get people food. The last one we learned about was Food Stamps, which we already knew about. So what we did was we went to the food market and handed these papers about all the info about the other organizations on them. At first I didn’t really know what to do to say or to ask people about these things, but later I got the hang of it and asked the people who looked like they needed it. Most of the people looked normal, like regular people but then I realized that anyone could look normal and rich but actually need to live on the organizations. While I was handing these out, I realized that people might not only need them but they don’t know any of the other organizations. Then I started to get why we were doing this.

After that we got lunch and headed over to the offices of the NYCCA. When we got there, they had a new beautiful building. Once we got inside there actual office, it was very small. Only a few people were there. It looked like only thirty or less people actually worked there. Yet they are one of the best and biggest and almost the most well known in New York. After we ate at the NYCCAH’s office, we were able to interview Joel Berg, NYCCAH’s executive director. He is very into the topic and had been in the movie we watched, A Place At The Table, and has also written a book. One way he hoped huger would end was if it were like slavery in the US, but not as drastic. He hoped that it would just be something we looked back on and thought why it happened and why did we not help the people in need.

I am an eighth grader at LREI and this year my social justice project is on Hunger in NYC. I chose Hunger in NYC because Hunger is such a big problem in the world and in NYC. Hunger is important because so many people in NYC don't have enough to buy food for dinner or breakfast.
