Trip to the New York Family Court, 11/19/14

On Wednesday November 19th my group and I went to the New York Family Court. We helped out Diana and Roy with adoption day. This is a day where families who have gone through the long and tenuous process where they adopt a kid. The kid could have been placed into a Foster House, taken away from his parents, or maybe the parent died, but at this time the new parents are finally the real parents of the kid. Diana was very generous to allow us to drop in and see the the finalization of the adoption. While watching this we could see how grateful the parents were. In all three cases the parent cried and cried, but they were tears of joy that they finally had their kid. When we weren’t watching this we were helping Diana and Roy give out goodies to the kids. Each kid got a stuffed animal, back pack, and a book. They had already decided which book went to which kid. After that Diana talked to us about what she had done with the Family Court. She first worked on the cases where kids had been abused. She said that this was hard for her because the evidence and the stories are so terrible that no know should ever endure what these kids did. After this trip I have learned how difficult the adoption period is. But I also learned how this process is worth it to these parents because they love these kids a lot.
