Interview with Vanessa Grigoriadis

For this fieldwork, my group and I conducted an interview with New York Times Magazine, Vanessa Grigoriadis, a writer who wrote last month’s cover story on rape on college campuses.  The article was centered around students from Columbia, UPenn, and other U.S. colleges.  The article primarily revolved around Columbia student Emma Sulkowicz who was raped in her dorm room and whose case was not handled properly by the university. In protest she has been carrying around the mattress she was raped on wherever she goes.  This powerful message struck us when we were first looking at the topic.  We got in contact with Vanessa through Florence’s mom, a photo editor at New York Magazine.  We met Vanessa in the lobby of the school and proceeded to guide her up to one of the fourth grade classroom where the interview was to be conducted.

Overall I’d say we exercised many topics.  We went from talking about how we could change ideas about rape in our school as well as in the world.   Vanessa told us about her experience interviewing Emma and the experience of writing a researching for the article.  Vanessa has been interested in the idea of ending rape since she was younger.
