NYCLU Visit

Blog Post on NYCLU visit with Deandra Kohn and Candis Tolliver.

After entering the large building in which the NYCLU is housed, we met with Deandra Kohn, an organizer for the NYCLU (New York City Liberties Union). We talked to the organization about their work with Stop and Frisk. They have worked with police brutality for decades, their job is to hold the NYPD responsible for their miscarriages of justice. In 2003, they discovered info on racial Stop and Frisk, and have worked with informing the public and holding the police responsible. Under the Bloomberg Administration Stop and Frisk has greatly increased. 700,000 every year are Stopped and Frisked by the NYPD.And Stop and Frisk does not decrease the crime rate in NYC. 90% of all people Stopped and Frisked are not arrested. And only 1 out of 160,000 police stops removed guns from the streets. The NYPD has tried to cover up the data.

Though the Mayor and Commissioner say: “We need Stop and Frisk to keep the city safe” it doesn’t get weapons off the streets. NYCLU likes to say, “Stop and Frisk take less guns off the streets than church gun buy back organizations”.

At our visit we learned a lot. This is only a small part. We also got a tour of the NYCLU office and pictures of us visiting which I will attach soon.

We must also research Supreme Court cases on Stop and Frisk and watch the movie: The Central Park Five. Which we have started.
