Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Caroline Kaplan, Movie Producer

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

Reflection:

What I did:

What I learned:

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Caroline talked about how she may have set her own limitations due to her beliefs of gender roles. She feels like she hasn’t specifically been purposefully discriminated against based on her gender but people have just referred to male colleagues who may be in a role less than hers. We learned that that there are starting to be a lot more women producers but we need more women in the position to green light movies and choose which ones to fund. She said that as a mother she had to balance being a mother with work. She always felt like she didn’t want to mix the two. She said that she felt that fathers in the media industry had more choices. The schedules are really strict and she feels like due to societal standards, women usually have a duty to their kids, but the fathers had more freedom.
