Name: Matias

Social Justice Group: Environment: Plastic Pollution

Date of Fieldwork: January 31, 2019

Name of Organization: Environmental Protection Agency

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Michael Hiscock

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

During this fieldwork our group interviewed Michael Hiscock over the phone.

What I learned:

I learned that there was plastic in every drinking sample around the world, but I also learned that there isn’t enough research done to show how plastics affect the human body. I also learned that

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that there are many steps to take when fighting plastic pollution. When fighting plastic pollution everyone needs to step in and do something about it, whether that means research, lobbying or just recycling, everyone needs to be doing their part. Since plastic hasn’t been around for very long, people need to be willing to try new things and approach the problem in different ways. Lastly we need to make recycling more accessible to everyone. It is very easy to recycle in the US, but in other countries many people don’t have access to recycling facilities or even an organized landfill to send their trash to. This is very harmful because a lot of that trash gets picked up by the wind and ends up in the ocean.
