Visiting Democracy Now!

Name: Max Taetle

Social Justice Group: Freedom of the Press

Date of Fieldwork: February 8, 2019

Name of Organization: Democracy Now!

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Simin Farkhondeh, Amy Goodman

Type of Fieldwork: Tour of Organization

What I did:

We visited Democracy Now! Which is a news broadcast created to cover the 1996 election but, because of popularity stayed on air. We took a tour of the entire place and saw what everyone’s jobs were. We also met with Amy Goodman who has been with Democracy Now! for as long as it’s been active

What I learned:

We learned about what goes on in the backgrounds of broadcasts and what goes in to the complex process of the press. We also got to see firsthand what journalists go through to report, the censorship, the problems, and the stressful live broadcasting.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

We learned what powerful voices do to help fix the problems in the world.
