Interviewing Danielle

Name: Anna Veronis

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Women: Maternal Health

Date of Fieldwork: December 18, 2018

Name of Organization: Danielle (Create NYC)

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Danielle

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

During this fieldwork, out group got a full detail, in-depth summary of what happened during Danielles birthing experience, and how it effects her today.

What I learned:

During this we learned the critical conditions and complications that Danielle and her baby faced. At first Danielle was going through a smooth pregnancy besides the fact that she had been previously diagnosed with Ulcertic colitis, a condition which messes up her iron levels. During the her birthing experience her baby had gotten stuck under her pelvic bone and the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck, that caused an insufficient amount of oxygen to reach her brain, which had caused Danielle to immediately rush into a C-section. After this her hemoglobin level was down to a 7, she had lost 700-800 ml of blood, you usually loose around 100-200 ml, she then became severely anemic. After this Danielles health had gone way down, and she couldn’t even hold her baby.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

From this I learned that although there can be complications, that are unexpected and couldn’t have been prevented, it really could be prevented by communication, which was a big problem during Danielles labor, and double checking and being extra careful.
