Talking about James Risen with Andrea Taetle.

Name: Max Taetle

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Freedom of the Press

Date of Fieldwork: December 21, 2018

Name of Organization: No organization

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Andrea Taetle Former civil rights lawyer

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We talked about a case where a New York times reporter known as James Risen was forced to leak his sources, and the threat of Jail loomed over him for years because of it. He had come into knowledge that an NSA program that had been used to spy on foreign terrorists was being used against the american people.

What I learned:

We learned foremost about this case which is really important to freedom of the press. But we also learned about whistle-blowers and their role in freedom of the press. James Risen is also a really influential journalist, he could’ve been put in jail or lost his job, but he stayed faithful to his source and held his head high because he knew the right thing to do.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

We learned that talking about what has happened in the past and learning about cases which involve your topic you can learn a lot.
