Phone Call with Ime Udoka

Name: Drew

Social Justice Group: 2018-2019, Sports, Activism & Race

Date of Fieldwork: November 26, 2018

Name of Organization: San Antonio Spurs

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Ime Udoka, Assistant Coach of the San Antonio Spurs

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We had a conversation about social justice and activism with Ime Udoka.

What I learned:

I learned that your gender doesn’t matter in the Spurs organisation because Becky Hammon, the female assistant coach, is treated the exact same way in the Spurs then anyone else. She knows the game of basketball and that’s all that matters to the Spurs. The Browns were also thinking about hiring a woman coach and Ime Udoka said that if she knows what she’s doing, she’s qualified.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that Gregg Popovich takes high schools who are in poverty to Spurs games because they don’t have the oppurtunity to that others have. He brings a coach and/or player to the high school every month. I also learned that Kaepernick was labeled as anti-military after speaking out during the national anthem.

Drew

Drew is an eighth grade student at LREI. He likes to play soccer and watch football and basketball. Drew is dedicated to issues of race, equality and activism in sports because he is inspired by Colin Kaepernick's and LeBron James' stand to the president and to justice.
