What I did:

We were in the Sports Management Conference that was being hosted at Columbia University. Len Elmore was the moderator and William Rhoden, David Steele, and Dr. Glenn Bracey was talking about Social Justice in Sports, which was the topic. We took notes and followed along to the speakers.

What I learned:

I learned that “Slacktivism” is not actually activism, it’s a lazy version that shows you don’t really care. I learned that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar sat out the same Olympics that Tommy Smith and John Carlos raised a fist in. I also learned that a second summit has been proposed by players.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that as soon as a player speaks up as Kaepernick did, they are labeled as anti-anything. Colin Kaepernick was labeled as anti-military after he started kneeling. Players have the power to change so many things in the world but they don’t because they are afraid of people labeling them.
