Name of Organization: LREI

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles:

Type of Fieldwork: Direct Action

What I did:

My social justice group and the entire middle school participated the school walkout. We waited on 6th avenue for 17 minutes then walked with the high schoolers to Washington Square Park where they made speeches.

What I learned:

We did the walkout to protest school shootings. After the Parkland shooting where 17 kids and adults people started to come together to protest school shootings. We made signs for the event and prepared for it. We waited for 17 minutes for the 17 deaths. It was called at 10:00 am when the shooter Nikolas Cruz entered the building. After we went with the high schoolers to Washington Square Park to make speeches on the issue.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that sticking up for what you believe in is the right thing to do. I did believe we should end school shootings because there is no place for fear inside of a classroom. This walkout helped raise awareness and make a stand to show that we are done with school shootings. I am very happy I participated in this walk out and raised awareness. This is a very big problem in the world and we need to stop it.
