Type of Fieldwork: Other

What I did:

We watched the Girl Rising film and learned about 9 different girls stories.

What I learned:

I learned about how so many girls around the world wish to go to school everyday. Our education in America is handed to us when we are young. There are no questions asked, all children must go to school. In other countries women and girls face religion, tradition, culture, and judgement when trying to get an education. Education for women is frowned upon and the men in these young girls lives get to choose what happens to them. Their fathers husbands, brothers, uncles, and even sons in some cases, make all the decisions for women. In some countries women can’t even go outside with out a man. Girls and women go through so much just trying to get educated.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that helping can just be listening to someones story and telling it to someone else. By just watching this movie my group and I were able to tell our parents and siblings these girls stories and the struggles they overcame. This is also talked about in the movie. By just telling someone else story it spreads awareness and give people a more personal connection to the topic.
