Watching No Woman No Cry

Name: Emily Familetti

Social Justice Group: Maternal/Fetal Care

Date of Fieldwork: March 12, 2018

Name of Organization: Every Mother Counts

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Christy Turlington

Type of Fieldwork: Movie

What I did:

I watched a movie called No Woman No Cry by Christy Turlington. It was very inspiring and I learned a lot from it.

What I learned:

I learned about different women’s stories and how they had birth. One woman ended up dying at birth which was a tragedy. I learn about how different places have different struggles. One thing that really struck me was that in one of the stories there were only four beds in the hospital and the women lived 5 miles away from it. This really struck me because hospitals are so far away which can make women struggle more than they need to.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that every pregnancy has different stories and to put every story under one category would be wrong and unjust. Even though every story is different they all are mothers they all deserve to choose what happens to there child. Women are not having the attention and quality they need to have a child. Women all struggle in different ways whether it is after before or during labor. Maybe it’s just stress. Everyone goes through that in one way or another. This should not be happening because our health systems are making it scary for women to have birth.
