My choice not yours- Julie Gold

Name: Emily

Social Justice Group: Maternal/Fetal Care

Date of Fieldwork: January 17, 2018

Name of Organization: Julie Gold

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Julie Gold- Midwife

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We interviewed Julie Gold and asked her questions about her experience being a midwife.

What I learned:

We learned that midwifery is more of a social interaction which basically means that it’s more about comforting people then actually medical actions. We also learned about how you can become a doula by doing an 8-hour class which means that it is easy for anyone to be a doula but to be a midwife you must go to nursing school and do a series of things. This surprised me because you would it would be hard to become a doula but it’s not. I also learned that midwives are looked down on at hospitals sometimes because they allow the mom to have home births.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that you must be very educated to be working on maternal and fetal health. I also learned that women do not get enough choices and their voices are hidden. I think that is unfair to women and it needs to change. I thought that women were not having trouble speaking up about how they want to deal with there child. For example, people get forced into having a c-section without there consent which is unjust and makes women feel weak while having a child even though they should feel strong.
