Third Grade Social Justice Class Sit-In

Name: Colette Leong

Social Justice Group: Race and Education

Date of Fieldwork: December 12, 2018

Name of Organization: LREI

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Sandra Chapman

Type of Fieldwork: Class Sit-In

What I did:

Our group sat in on Sandra Chap’s third grade social justice class. She teaches children at early ages about race and gender inequity, and how our new generation can fight for social justice.

What I learned:

I learned that the location where you are determines if you are an “X” (most people) or an “O” (few people). In this situation, Chap defines “X” and “O” as white and black. If we were in a room in New York, and if “X” referred to white, and if “O” referred to black, there would definitely be more X’s in the room rather than Os. But if we were in a room in Africa and if “X” referred to black, and if “O” referred to white, there would be more X’s in the room. By this explanation, we learned that by having more X’s in the room doesn’t mean you’ve won a game.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that giving lessons to kids about social justice will benefit our society. If most kids were taught about social inequality, we will have less conflict with these issues in the future.

Colette

Hi, I'm Colette and I'm in the social justice group Educational Equity. I believe all students regardless of their financial situation and race should get a quality education. Students who are financially in need don't have equal rights to education as to students who are financially well off. In order for us to have an educated community, all students should receive a quality education now!
