The Protection of Immigrants; An interview with the Mayors Office of Immigrant Affairs

Name: Marlowe Glass

Social Justice Group: DACA and Immigration

Date of Fieldwork: December 21, 2017

Name of Organization: New York Mayors Office of Immigrant Affairs

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Sam Solomon Deputy Director of Policy

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

During this fieldwork we sat down with Sam Solomon to interview him and ask questions about what exactly he does at the MOIA.

What I learned:

We learned all about the exact things that go on in the MOIA. He discussed the process of dealing with bills and negotiating them, specifically how they go about passing certain bills. He talked about a bill he read that would protect Immigrants from nataryo’s (fake lawyers) specifically regarding court cases. I found this extremely interesting because he talked about how important it is for New York City to protect their immigrants. We learned how important Immigrants are to New York and how New York doesn’t even ask people for their immigration status in almost all cases as it is not necessary in almost all cases. I just thought overal this fieldwork was so important to our learnign because we got to hear from the direct people dealing with immigration in New York on how they feel about DACA and immigration.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

Overall New York is so protective in terms of Immigrants within our city. We learned about the social justice work that goes in to helping immigrants. But overall we mostly talked about the government side of Immigration in New York and not a lot about the social justice work.
