Interview with Key Burns Founder of H4H

Name: Gus Dotson

Social Justice Group: Veterans/Life After War

Date of Fieldwork: December 7, 2017

Name of Organization: Hearts for Heroes

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Key Burns Founder of Hearts for Heroes

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

My group has been in touch with Key Burns, the founder of a program called Hearts 4 Heoroes, we had atempted to call her once but an emergency came up and we were unable to complete it. But this time we got a hold of her and had a very interesting conversation about how she is helpingveterans.

What I learned:

One thing that I learned about my topic is that many veterans don’t want to look for help while they are still in service because if their comanders find out they will often times give them an honerable discharge.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that insurance agencies will tell comanders in the military if any of their soldiers have been to programs to help with PTSD or other injuries. this is not ok because you have a right to privacy and your boss doesn’t have to know everything about you.
