Interviewing Nicolle Gonzalez

Name: Kaya Karpati

Social Justice Group: Maternal/Fetal Care

Date of Fieldwork: November 3, 2017

Name of Organization: Changing Woman Iniatative

Person (people) with whom I met and their job titles: Nicolle Gonzalez

Type of Fieldwork: Interview

What I did:

We went to the Every Mother Counts office and spoke to Nicolle Gonazalez. Nicolle is the founder of Changing Woman Initiative. She told about the struggles of the Navajo Reservation even though it is 2017.

What I learned:

I think we all learned a lot but something that really stuck with me was when Nicolle Gonzalez told us about the woman who lost a baby at the closest hospital and then had to go back because there were no other ones within reach. It thought this was really sad because I think that the people on the Navajo Reservation feel forgotten and its really important that everybody has the option to go somewhere to have their child safely.

What I learned about Social Justice “work” and/or Civil and Human rights “work” from this fieldwork:

I learned that Social Justice is an ongoing fight. It is not something that can be solved quickly. It is something that has to be thought out and it needs to have a lot of support. Nicolle is working really hard to help the people on the reservation. She is fighting for her community because she believes that everyone deserves the right to be healthy and happy.
