Interview with Krishna Washburn, 2/16/17

Krishna is a determined women who continues to dance despite her visual impairment.

Krishna is a dancer, and started dancing when she was in lower school. She danced throughout high school, and continued to dance afterwards, as it slowly became a part of her.

When Krishna became visually impaired this part of her was taken away. There were no organizations that offered Krishna the opportunity to dance, and after searching repeatedly for a dance studio for people with disabilities, she met a women named Kitty Lunn. Kitty is paralyzed from the neck down, which happened after she slipped down the subway stairs trying to catch a train, and was rushed to the hospital to find out she would not be able to move again. Kitty did not let this get in her way, and continued to dance, but in a different way. Kitty Lunn is a major activist for disabled rights, she has donated to many organizations, and founded the dance company the Infinity Dance Theater in 1995, for people with and without disabilities.

Krishna discovered the dance theater a few years age, and has worked with Kitty for awhile now. Krishna said that when she first started dancing again the biggest challenge was group dances, because she has to be aware of where everyone is at all times, which is hard when you are visually impaired. Kitty then stated, “I had to learn it all over again. It was a different way to move a different way to learn.”

Krishna has worked through this challenge, and has overcome it. She now dances with more ease, and is able to continue her passion thanks to Kitty Lunn.

Krishna also loves to cook, but when she became visually impaired the doctor told Krishna she could never cook again. Krishna recalled, “I’m technically not allowed to cook, but I love to cook, cooking is one of my favorite things to do.” Everyone should be allowed to pursue their favorite things, and Krishna definitely would. She later on said, “No one is going to stop me and tell me I cannot cook.” Krishna now has a special cutting board with a flat edge on it, so there is no worries about cutting herself with her knife. She also has a talking thermometer to make sure she does not overcook anything. Krishna continues to cook, and does not let anything get in her way.

Krishna is a remarkable person, and has overcome many obstacles throughout her life with her strong perseverance and bold attitude.

Krishna is an inspiration to all. She is a fighter, and due to this she can keep doing what she loves.

Sylvie

Hi my name is Sylvie Goldner and I am an eighth grade student at the Little Red School House. My group is focusing on helping and educating ourselves and others on kids with disabilities, and the accessibility they have to play sports. Being active is so important for all kids and adults, and no condition should stop someone from playing sports, dancing, and participating in a yoga class. Having a disability shouldn’t be a boundary to what sports a person can play and do. Having a disability should be a reason to be more active, because there is equipment, teams, and classes designed for your disability. We don’t believe that disabilities are an obstacle but a starting point.
