Hampshire Social Justice Workshop 2/16

At 6:30 I met with Marcus, his mom, and my father’s friend Abby. We got there early and were joined by many people. One woman there, named Rage, was an attorney for Criminal Defence. We spent a two hours listening to the panel, made up of Rage and several other people who worked in Social Justice topics. Although there were many people at the Workshop it was relatively quiet for the time we were listening to the panel answering question directed at them about their field of work. After that we talked to Rage privately and asked her several questions about her field of work. One question was what were some problems that could occur to our future with our current president. She said that she thinks that the amount of people that are going to be arrested will increase because more people will be going to jail for minor crimes. We asked her what she thought should be changed in the prison system.  She said that she wishes that there were no prisons. I disagree with this because I think that prisons should be around, but be used for rehabilitation and protection, not punishment. When we asked her about some odd court cases she has seen she responded by telling us about how there are certain apartment complexes that have police that will arrest people of different ethnicities if they try to enter the building. Thus can lead to families of tenants going to jail for trying to visit because it is “private property”.
