Guns and Empathy: Lisa Miller

In February 2017 our group invited Lisa Miller to come into our classroom to have a screening of her documentary and to answer some questions. Lisa Miller is a journalist who works for New York Magazine. She created a documentary called “Guns and Empathy”. This documentary paired 16 people up who were on different sides of the gun debate to tell their traumatic stories. After they had told these stories to their partner they regroup in front of the 15 others and tell their partner’s story in the first person. The afternoon before Lisa Miller came in to talk to us she one an award at the asmys for this documentary. After the screening of her short film she talked about this process of telling the story in the first person because that is the real moment where you really feel empathetic and feel what that person might have gone through. Acting like that is your story. The people in our group asked a couple of our own questions and then we opened it up to our fellow classmates. This was a great privilege and I know I can speak for my whole group when I say it was a great success.

I am interested in Gun Control because it is a huge problem in America and there aren't proper laws in place. There is no way to take away guns from Americans, but there is a proper way to use them.
