City In The Community Meet On 2-8-17

Recently, my group mates and I met with Eric, a coach that works for DUSC, and at City in The Community (CITC). CITC partners with NYCFC, and sends coaches to public schools to keep young kids active during P.E. Eric is one of those coaches. We had the awesome opportunity to join Eric, and play soccer with 1st, and 3rd graders. The P.S. 1 gym teacher explained that the 1st graders had only had 3 gym classes so far in this school year. That was incredibly shocking for us to hear. Though it was sad that these kids weren’t getting the right amount of play, we were glad that we were able to teach them soccer drills, and had fun with them. It was really sweet to see the kids high giving each other. You could tell that they were really glad to have us there too. As a next step, our group wants to reach out back to CITC, and see if we can volunteer again, because we had a lot of fun. For the teach-in, I want to remember how happy the kids where to be active. Playing with them made us realize that kids seem so much happier when they get a chance to run around during the school day.

Here, kids in first grade are listing fro instructions from their P.E. teacher.

My social justice project is Supporting Kids In Education And In Life Through Sports. Sports are incredible beneficial, and important to physical and mental health. Our group is working with different organizations to try to incorporate more physical activity into a students day.
