Interview with Patricia McCormick- Author of Sold the Novel

On my group’s second field work we met and interviewed a woman named Patricia McCormick. Patricia McCormick is the writer of Sold, I am Malala, Cut, Purple Heart and many more. Sold is about a girl that is sold by her family into prostitution in Nepal. I read this book and so did another member of my group so we thought that it would be a good idea to reach out to her. When we meet with Patricia McCormick she explained how she went to Nepal and visited brothels and saw women stuck in prostitution. She also told us how there was one woman who was living in the “Red Light District” (which is an area within big cities full of prostitution) who had a son that was 9 years old. She said she talked to the boy and that he completely understood what was happening to his mother, how she had to sleep with many men every night. Hearing about this little boy for me was devastating because he had to watch his mother be trafficked just so they wouldn’t be thrown out on the street. While on this interview Patricia McCormick told us about an organization called Dignity Backpacks which are packages full of new shampoos, hair brushes, books, clothes for women stuck in brothels or, recently out of prostitution. I think my group wants to use something like this to start a drive at school or for the teach in for everyone to create the packages. A continuing question I have and I want to do more research on is if men and boys are sexual traficked as well.

Acadia

Hi, my name is Acadia and i'm in the sexual trafficking group. I chose this group because this affects all of the young girls in the world no matter where they are from. We all need to work together to fight this problem of physical and mental abuse.
