Taylor Swift Experience 12/1/16

This fieldwork may be a bit confusing as to why we would go, but we had a very good reason. Taylor swift has been a huge figure in the media and is also a woman. She is well known for being a country singer and later switching to the pop genre. But she is also notorious for having a lot of ex-boyfriends and is constantly called on it. We thought it would be a good idea to visit the museum and see if it would display Swift’s awards, achievements and things about her career or if it would showcase drama with other celebrities, her boyfriends and other stereotypical “girl” things. The experience was located at the South Street Seaport so it was easy to get there. When we arrived, there were close to no people, so that made exploring easier. There were two floors, the top floor with a movie, karaoke, and dancing. The bottom floor had her outfits, personal memorabilia, and a small gift shop. First, we went upstairs and we started with the movie. The movie featured her acceptance speeches and a timeline of her most important performances. There was also an intro video outside of the small theater which showed Taylor talking about how once she performed a song right from her album and she thought it was very special because it wasn’t about her performing a popular, hit song, it was about her performing a song that was meaningful to her. Afterward, we went downstairs and looked at the “artifacts.” There were several cases displaying her different outfits/costumes for the performances that were the most memorable or significant to her career. There were also large posters showing each album and the songs featured in the album. There were also small pages of notes that Taylor had written about songs or ideas placed along with the costumes in the glass cases. I think that the museum helped a lot with our project and was a great example of a very well known woman in the media who was able to maintain control on how some of the media portrays her image. I think that it would be incredibly hard, but we could at least try to contact Taylor Swift and ask her about her experience in the media since she started when she was so young. Taylor has both a good and kind of bad reputation and I think we could get a lot of information. If it is not possible we could at least use her career as part of our workshop in March. I am so happy that we got to go to the Taylor Swift Experience because it was both fun and really informing about our topic.
