Albany Climate Change Protest – 1/13/16

We heard about a climate change and oil pipeline rally in Albany and we of course wanted to go. We joined together with the  environment group in the other class and we worked to set up a way for us to go. We ended up getting on a bus to Albany at 6:45 in the morning so that we could arrive at the rally on time. When we finally arrived at the rally, it was freezing out and everybody was chanting. There were about 400 – 500 people in front of Governor Cuomo’s office and we were given signs with anti pipeline messages. We chanted for about an hour with activism workers giving speeches once in a while. We eventually walked towards another building that Governor Cuomo worked in where we met up with more than 1000 protesters chanting about many other subjects like minimum wage and the Black Lives Matter movement. We all picked up a VERY large pipeline shaped balloon and we walked around chanting about pipelines and oil spills and fracking and leaks. After several hours of chanting, we had to start leaving to get back to the bus to take us home. I thought that this was an extremely useful and informative fieldwork and I am glad that we were able to attend and help out.

I am an eighth grader at Lrei and I am currently working with two wonderful classmates of mine on a project surrounding the environment and the pollution of waterways. The reason why I chose to work with environment and specifically the waterways because from earlier times I have been really interested in marine biololoy and I wanted to see a different perspective on the way that people care about the environment and the organisms in it.
