Interview with Michelle Kaminsky 1/21/16

imageMy group and I wanted to talk to other type of women in the workforce, so we contacted Michelle Kaminsky, a parent at Little Red, but also a district attorney in Brooklyn. Kaminsky works in the area of domestic violence and has been working there for 5 years now. She started working in a different area after coming out of law school but ended up in Domestic Violence. While we were interviewing her it was very surprising to me because she said completely different things then anyone else we had previously interviewed. She was never discriminated by her gender and she was working with a lot of women. Since domestic violence is more of a thing to talk to women about since women are not the perpetrator in the relationship; women can but are not as likely. This helped our project a little more because we have two different perspectives now. Everyone we have interviewed have all said that having children was a problem, Kaminsky doesn’t remember the exact about of women at law school but she was close friends with 3 other women and they couldn’t pursue going into law. They had to drop out and sometimes they came back but couldn’t manage the work and home life equally. This has a big effect on women in the country. The U.S. is the only industrialized nation in which the government does not support paid parental leave. After talking to Kaminsky she gave us a tour office which was pretty cool. My group learned a lot of new material that is going to help us for the teach in.
