Court Monitoring with Robert Gangi

On Friday 1/22, my Group and I met with PROP leader, Robert Gangi. We met with him for our third time to go court monitoring at a court on Centre street in Chinatown. We had sheets that we could fill in the ethnicities of the people that were being tried for crimes in the court. At least 90% of the people we saw being tried were people of color and they were being tried for small crimes that would have been better solved with a warning or reminder. We saw that a lot of these people were arrested for assault, or in plainer words a fistfight. After sitting in on the court monitoring for an hour and a half, we needed some fresh air. We walked around Chinatown in search of somewhere to sit and eat. We finally sat at a small restaurant and ate. We joined Robert back at Centre street at 1pm to meet Michelle McGrath who is a staff attorney at the court we visited. We talked a lot with her and her work and she was really into our project. She discussed the court and what she often sees. How most cases are people of color for small petty crimes. Overall this was one of our best fieldworks and got to see an actual court
