LSA Food Pantry Visit #2

My group decided to go back to LSA because we enjoyed going so much a few months ago and we thought that it was an amazing organization that helped lots of people. I liked how the organization not only provided people with food but they also helped with immigration, child care, tutoring and more. They believe that to get out of poverty you can’t just focus on one small part when the problem is so big and complicated. This is why they’re approach has so many different aspects, but this is what helps the most. Actually, the woman we worked with at the food pantry told us that she used to come to the LSA food pantry as a kid. This shows how she thought that it was such an amazing organization and they helped her so much that she decided to actually come back and get a job there to give back. When we first arrived at the food pantry we started by unpacking boxes and restocking the shelves. Then people began to come to the pantry. One by one, they would enter the room with the shelves of food and depending on the size of their family they had a different number of points for proteins, grains, vegetables, fruits, and dairy. They were able to choose which foods they wanted that added up to the amount of points they were given. Ryann, Pierre, Reggi and I were each at a different station and helped people get their food. It was difficult at times because many of the people spoke little English but we were able to communicate by saying the names of the food and how many points they had left in Spanish. I think that this fieldwork was very good for us because it allowed us to meet people who were actually in the situation that we have been focusing. It made me feel like I had made a difference in a family’s life which felt really good. I think this is very important because if everyone was able to help and volunteer and raise awareness, poverty might not be as bad as it is right now. Overall, this fieldwork impacted our group a lot and we felt like we were actually helping to make a difference in someone’s life.
