Interview with Wen Zhou 1/20/16

My group and I interviewed Wen Zhou CEO and founder of 3.1 Phillip Lim. Our group is trying to interview a verity of women in a high position in the workplace. Wen had a lot to say about her position and how she got to be a CEO of a top clothing company. She moved to New York in 1985 and she did not speak a single word of English; she only knew how to speak Mandarin. She was living on the lower east side in china town and in China town the people spoke Cantonese. English was her third language. She worked at McDonald and as delivery girl, she didn’t mind the work, she loved working. She hated school but was very interested in the fashion industry. She started off with cutting fabrics and selling it to top companies like Clavin Klein. Wen was working with a male partner at the time and had realized that he was being paid more even though they are doing equal amount of work. She brought this to attention to her boss and her boss decided to give her a raise to make it fair, but Wen still thought it was a bad thing and she wanted to change it. At the age of 21 she opened her own company called Ageis which is still around today. She met Phillip Lim through selling fabrics in her first job and was still friends with him 31. She was in the back of a taxi when her and Phillip came up with the name of their company. They had both recently turned 31 and Wen had the idea of just calling it Phillip Lim but he was too shy and didn’t want his name to be it. Wen was creative and she said that they should call it 31 Phillip Lim but soon later became 3.1 Phillip Lim. As a CEO people have doubted her ability to have a huge title. She also noted that 95% of the people working for her are women. It doesn’t matter if you are just coming out of college or have been working in the business, she is looking for someone who is “smarter” then her so they could improve her company and make it better!
