Stop and Stock With NYC Food Bank 12•2•15

On Wednesday my group and I went to the Food Bank for NYC. The Food Bank does many things like serve a full meal to only senior people, they have a mini grocery store for the people so they can pick what they want for the amount of points they had. When we walked in we looked around and saw that it wasn’t that big of a place. We sat next to another group that hd already been there and they knew what to do. We looked to our left and saw they had a big kitchen for all of the food. They said that they had the most amount of people on Thanksgiving day than another. When we went down stairs we saw their pantry. It was setup like a mini grocery market and they had various items on their shelves. For example grains, vegetables, protein, fruit, etc… My group and Dave Freedman, Layne’s dad, were assigned to grains. Grains was 3 points for everything, except the mac and cheese. That was 2 for 3, which confused lot’s of people. After we got the hang of it, there were some Spanish speaking people which Layne and I had to help because Sophie takes Mandarin. We had to face challenges such as telling people “no”. Imagine telling that to a hungry person that couldn’t get all the food they wanted. We had this one lady who demanded that she only got cereal and she was pretty mean about it. So she was the only one we let go. They only could go once a month and now knowing this, I realize that this makes a big difference in their month.

I am an eighth grader at LREI and this year my social justice project is on Hunger in NYC. I chose Hunger in NYC because Hunger is such a big problem in the world and in NYC. Hunger is important because so many people in NYC don't have enough to buy food for dinner or breakfast.
