NYAGV Meeting 11/18/15

On November 18, my group and I walked to the New Yorkers Against Gun Violence offices on Lafayette St. The offices were in a old firehouse, on the 3rd floor. The offices were fairly small and empty. There were about 5 people in the office. We were immediately greeted by Leah Gunn Barrett, the Director of NYAGV. She was a very nice lady, welcoming and kind. After she greeted us, we went to sit in an empty meeting room. She then brought over brochures talking about the new law that they were trying to pass, called Daniel’s Law. It calls for gun owners with children to lock up their guns out of their children’s reach. I thought that it was a very good idea, and a very thoughtful law. After we talked about that law, we then talked about the idea of presenting that law to the PTA of our school. We still have to talk about when we are going to do that. I think that we learned how to persuade someone really well, with they way that she talked. I also think that we learned a lot about gun violence and how it affects young children. The organization was delightful to work with and easy to make contact with. I think that our whole group was very patient with the woman. I think that we also asked a lot of good questions about the law. I want to take away from this meeting that we should hand out something because it helped me stay a little more focused about everything.

Hello, my name is Will Bompey, and I am an eighth grader at Little Red School House and Elisabeth Irwin High School. My group's topic is gun violence prevention. I chose this topic because I feel like there are too many massacres, and we are becoming numb to that as a society.
