Democracy Now! Visit

On the 17th of December, our group made a visit to the Democracy Now! headquarters located in New York City. Democracy Now! is an independent news organization that focuses on delivering raw and uncensored news to people everywhere. They broadcast on television, radio, and do not advertise using giant media corporations.

During our visit, we learned a lot about the news, and how it is important to freedom of speech. We learned about how large scale news companies like CNN, ABC, etc. differ from news organizations like Democracy Now!.

We had the privilege of touring the studio, and watching an episode on the air. (We even had a shout out from Amy Goodman!) Afterwards, the hosts talked to us about the issues discussed in the show, and we had a great conversation about how the news we consume effects the way we look at the world.

Thank you very much to everyone at Democracy Now! and everyone else involved with arranging and organizing our visit.

I am an eighth grader at LREI and my social justice topic is freedom of speech. I chose this as my topic because I was interested in solving problems with free speech and imprisoned writers.
