Interview With Peter Scheer 12/4/15

On Friday, December 4th my group and I had a phone interview with Peter Scheer. Peter is the executive director of the First Amendment Coalition, a California based organization with the goal to help preserve free speech. He went to Harvard Law and was a lawyer for many years. During that time some of the cases he took on were on the topic. One that he touched on in particular was a case where he represented a small town newspaper. They were being sued by a corporation stating that they published classified materials. He related this to the Pentagon Papers Supreme Court case which we learned about last year. He has appeared at almost all levels of the court including Supreme Court. He said that after working in law some of these cases he had inspired him to become an activist for freedom of speech. His articles on free speech have been published in publications such as the Huffington Post, San Fransisco Chronicle, the Los Angeles Daily Journal and many more media publications. This interview helped shed light on the importance of our topic and how many people are taken advantage of by bigger corporations and are having their free speech limited.

Hi, I'm Nissim. I'm an eighth grader at LREI and my social justice topic is Freedom of Speech & Imprisoned writers. I chose this topic because I feel everyone should have equal voice and no one should be kept in the shadows for their writing.
